Optimizing HVAC Systems with Belimo Valve Actuator

Belimo valve actuator are used in a wide range of HVAC applications. These actuators offer high performance and reduced power consumption. Valve actuators are used for a number of applications such as fast-running, fail-safe, outdoor, etc.

Belimo actuated valves are widely used in the beverage industry to control coolant flow at distribution points, in combination with thermostat controllers, among other uses. The actuator handles a wide range of valve types, including 2-way/3-way ball valves, butterfly valves, globe valves, and diaphragm valves, to mention a few. Belimo Valve Actuator are an excellent alternative to solenoid valves because they close slowly and can prevent or restrict pressure spikes and pounding.

In addition to managing coolant flow for heat transfer, another chiller-specific use is preventing backflow glycol at the chiller reservoir if the process pump fails. These are fail-safe valves, with the valves powered open and returning to the closed position if the pump

Belimo Valve Actuator Construction

Belimo Characterized Control Valves have a novel ball design and feature a rotating actuator. The valve is bubble-tight, avoids energy losses, and reduces running expenses. Belimo Valve Actuator might be a full or standard port. The difference between a conventional ball valve and a full-port ball valve is the size of the ball and bore in proportion to the valve’s nominal pipe size. For example, a 3/4-inch full-port ball valve has a bore diameter of 3/4 inch, whereas a conventional ball valve has a bore diameter of 1/2 inch. Full-port bore size equals pipe size, whereas standard-port bore size is the next smaller pipe size. Full port valve bodies require a lot of force to open and close the ball. The Belimo Characterized Control Valve products, CCV and HTCCV, are ordinary port valves.

Spring Return Valve Actuators

Spring Return actuators use an internal spring to push the actuator open or closed in response to power loss. Electronic fail-safe actuators use supercapacitors to discharge stored energy to the motor, which drives the actuator to open or close in response to a lack of power. When power is turned off, non-spring return actuators remain in their existing positions.

The full-port ball valve has negligible flow resistance and hence produces only a very modest pressure drop when fully open; it is commonly used for isolating flow. When fully open, the standard-port ball valve produces a higher pressure drop; it is commonly employed to regulate flow to a coil.

Modulating Valve Actuator

A modulating Belimo Valve Actuator positions, or throttles, the damper or valve as directed by the controller to obtain the required position or flow.  An open/close, or on/off, control signal generates a two-position response (0% open or 100% open) for the damper or valve, which typically has 24 VAC to 230 VAC contacts.
